Samuel was strong and calm. Mateo wasn’t. His crying was high-pitched, rhythmic, desperate, like an alarm that never stopped. His small body tensed, his eyes rolled back in a way that chilled me to the bone.
The specialist, Dr. Adrián Vela, dismissed it as “colic.”
My sister-in-law, Clara, had another theory. She said it was my fault, that I was emotionally distant, and that the children needed a “suitable family environment.” In reality, what she wanted was control of the Blackwood Trust and legal guardianship of my children.
Then Lina arrived.

Clara despised her.
“She’s a lazy bum,” she muttered one evening at dinner. “I saw her sitting in the dark for hours doing nothing. And who knows… maybe she’s stealing Aurelia’s jewels when you’re not here. You should keep an eye on her.”
Driven by grief and suspicion, I spent $100,000 installing state-of-the-art infrared cameras throughout the house. I didn’t tell Lina. I wanted proof.
For two weeks I avoided watching the recordings, burying myself in work. But one rainy Tuesday, at three in the morning, unable to sleep, I opened the secure stream on my tablet.
I expected to see her asleep.
I expected to find her rummaging through my things.
What I saw took my breath away.
Night vision images showed Lina sitting on the floor between the two cribs. She wasn’t resting. She was holding Mateo, the fragile twin, skin to skin against her chest, just as Aurelia used to do to regulate a baby’s breathing. But that wasn’t the most shocking thing.
The camera captured a gentle, steady movement. Lina swayed slowly as she hummed a melody: the same lullaby Aurelia had composed for the twins before she died. It had never been published. No one else in the world should ever know it.
Then the nursery door opened.
Clara came in with a small silver dropper in her hand. She went straight to Samuel’s crib—the healthy twin—and began pouring a clear liquid into his bottle.
Lina stood up, hugging Mateo. Her voice, soft but firm, came through the audio.
—Stop, Clara. I already switched the bottles. Now you’re only giving him water. What about the sedative you’ve been giving Mateo to make him seem sick? I found the bottle on your dresser yesterday. Family games

“You’re nothing but an employee,” Clara spat. “No one will believe you. Damian thinks Mateo’s condition is genetic. As soon as he’s declared unfit, I’ll keep custody, the assets, everything… and you’ll disappear.”
“I’m not just an employee,” Lina replied, stepping forward. She pulled an old, worn medallion from her apron. “I was the nursing student on duty the night Aurelia died. I was the last person she spoke to.”
Her voice cracked.
“She told me you tampered with her IV. She knew you wanted the Blackwood name. Before she died, she made me swear that if I didn’t survive, I would find her children. I spent two years changing my name and my appearance just to get into this house and keep them safe from you.”
Clara lunged at her.
I didn’t wait any longer.
I ran down the hall, fury coursing through my veins. I burst into the room just as Clara raised her hand to hit Lina. I didn’t scream. I simply grabbed her wrist and looked her in the eyes.

Lina sat beside me, gently placing her hand on Mateo’s head. He wasn’t crying. For the first time in his life, he was sleeping peacefully.
“She sang it to them every night in the hospital,” she whispered. “Aurelia said that as long as they heard that melody, they would know their mother was still watching over them. I just… didn’t want the song to end.”
Then I understood something devastating: despite all my wealth, I had been poor. I built walls of glass and surveillance, but I forgot to build a home sustained by love.
