The exact second the man Vincent Sullivan had trusted for twenty-two years looked at a waitress from Fifth Street and decided she was easy enough to enter, simple enough to charm, harmless enough to sit beside. Emma held his gaze for one beat. Then gave the smallest shrug. If you want to. Dom sat. Comfortable already. That was the first mistake. He started with himself. Men like him always do. Not directly. Never in a way that sounds like bragging to their own ears. He offered stories. Small polished observations. The city changing. Restaurants not being what they used to be. The burden of loyalty in a place where too many people mistake fear for respect. Emma let the silence do the work. Let him fill it. That was the trick Ethan had warned her about. Men like Dom cannot tolerate a vacuum. If you leave enough air in the room, they rush to occupy it with whatever version of themselves they most want believed. And once he started, he kept going. He asked whether she lived nearby. She gave him just enough truth to feel ordinary. He asked if she came to Carmines often. She said not really, but every now and then it was nice to sit somewhere quiet and feel like she had a different life for one lunch. That line made him lean in. She saw it. The subtle change. The private classification happening in his head. He thought he understood her now. A woman a little tired of her own small life. A little lonely. A little flattered to be noticed in a better room. Exactly the woman she needed him to see. And because he thought he had finished reading her, he started showing himself. Not fully. Men like Dom do not confess. They reveal themselves in what they don’t bother hiding because they think the person across from them does not matter enough to read the omission. He made one small joke about Vincent Sullivan being too attached to old ways. Another about loyalty being a word people use when they really mean control. Then a third line, light on its face, almost nothing, about how some families mistake obedience for strength and end up bleeding for it. Emma kept her expression where it needed to be. Interested. Neutral. A woman hearing more than she fully understood. But inside, something clicked into place. An innocent man attached to that house would have stepped carefully. Too carefully, maybe. He would have cleared himself without being asked. He would have moved away from implication. Dom didn’t. He redirected. He tested. He watched her face every time he brushed near the Sullivans without naming them too directly, looking not for what she knew but for what she feared. That was the tell. Not one statement. The shape of the conversation. A man with nothing to hide clears space. A man protecting something keeps nudging the room away from it. Emma knew it before dessert menus appeared. She knew it when he asked, too casually, whether she had many friends in the city. She knew it when he laughed softly and said women like you usually see more than people think and then watched to see whether the sentence landed. She knew it when he leaned back and got just a little too comfortable, the way men do when they’ve already written you small in their heads. And that was the part that got under her skin. Not just that he was involved. That he looked right at her and saw nothing worth worrying about. Nothing dangerous. Nothing sharp. Nothing at all but a waitress in a nice restaurant who should have been grateful he chose to sit down. She smiled anyway. Answered anyway. Stayed exactly where she was. Instead, Emma went straight back to the Sullivan house carrying something much worse for him than a confession. A pattern. And when Vincent asked her one question, clean and direct – Did he clear himself? She looked that man in the eye and said, No. Would you have trusted your instincts there, or would you have needed harder proof before naming the man in the room?
