15 Forgotten Railroad Towns Hidden Deep in the Appalachian Mountains

In the first decades of the 20th century, there were places in the Appalachian Mountains where the railroad did not merely pass through a town.

The railroad was the town.

Track arrived first. Houses followed.

A company would survey a narrow river gorge, a timbered plateau, or a coal-bearing hollow where no ordinary settlement had reason to exist. Rails would be pushed into the mountains behind grading crews and bridge gangs. Then freight cars arrived carrying machinery, lumber, roofing tin, stoves, tools, flour, dynamite, school desks, and sometimes the pieces of the houses themselves.

A community could appear in a season.

It might have a store before it had a road.

It might have a railroad depot before it had a church.

It might contain hundreds or even thousands of people and still possess no practical connection to the outside world except 2 strips of steel following a river through the trees.

These places were not settled in the old sense. Many were installed.

The company owned the mine or mill. It often owned the houses. It controlled the store. It sometimes paid wages partly in scrip redeemable only within the company system. The physician might be on the company payroll. The railroad might belong to the same interests that owned the coal beneath the mountain or the timber growing above it.

The arrangement could create astonishing concentrations of industry in landscapes that appeared, from a distant ridge, almost uninhabited.

Then the coal thinned.

The timber ran out.

A mine became too expensive.

A mill burned.

A railroad abandoned passenger service.

The same system that had assembled the town could dismantle it.

Houses were sold for lumber. Rails were lifted. Machinery went elsewhere. Families packed whatever belonged to them and boarded trains that carried them away along the same route by which they had arrived.

Within a generation, rhododendron could grow through a kitchen.

A cellar wall could disappear beneath moss.

A staircase could continue up a hillside toward a building that no longer existed.

Appalachia is full of these absences.

One of the clearest lies deep inside the New River Gorge of West Virginia, where the river has cut so deeply through the plateau that the canyon walls rise nearly 1,000 ft above the water.

There, on a narrow bench between cliff and river, stood Sewell.

There was scarcely enough level ground for the town itself, much less ordinary streets. The railroad occupied the available corridor. Houses climbed the slope in rows. Wooden stairs performed the work that roads did elsewhere.

By the 1880s, Sewell had become one of the important coal and coke centers of the gorge.

Its defining structures were the beehive coke ovens.

More than 100 of them stood along the river and railroad, low masonry chambers in which coal was heated in the absence of sufficient oxygen until volatile compounds were driven off and the remaining carbon-rich coke could be shipped to iron and steel furnaces.

At night the ovens transformed the gorge.

Orange light pulsed from openings in the stone. Smoke hung along the canyon. Fire reflected from rock faces and low clouds.

Passengers traveling the Chesapeake & Ohio through the New River country remembered looking down the line and seeing the ovens burning in rows, so numerous that the mountain appeared illuminated from within.

The impression was spectacular from a railcar window.

For the people who lived beside the ovens, it was work.

Men loaded coal largely by hand. Laborers earned wages that might amount to only a few dollars for a long day of dangerous physical effort. Families lived in houses wedged wherever the slope allowed construction.

Everything required by the town arrived by railroad.

Flour.

Salt.

Nails.

Tools.

Medicine.

Furniture.

Mail.

Coffins.

Even objects that seemed improbable in such difficult country could be delivered if someone could pay the freight. A piano could reach Sewell more easily by rail than a wagon could.

The railroad carried nearly everything out as well.

Coal and coke left the gorge for the industrial cities beyond the mountains, especially the furnaces that transformed Appalachian fuel into iron and steel.

The town’s apparent isolation was therefore deceptive.

Sewell was physically remote but economically connected to a network extending through Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and the larger industrial world.

That connection had only 1 reliable artery.

The track.

When coke production declined and the old ovens gradually went cold, Sewell lost the reason that had justified its improbable location.

By the middle of the 20th century, the population disappeared.

People left by the same practical route everything else had used.

Rail.

Afterward, the gorge moved quickly.

The Appalachian forest is patient when people are present and aggressive when they leave.

Roots pushed against foundations.

Rhododendron crowded walkways.

Wooden structures collapsed.

Vegetation obscured retaining walls.

Today, a person who reaches the old site does not encounter a preserved town so much as evidence that one was once there.

Stone foundations remain.

Rows of coke ovens survive in varying states of collapse.

Stairways climb through trees toward emptiness.

The most striking thing is not that ruins exist.

It is how little time the forest required to make a functioning industrial community seem ancient.

Farther along the New River Gorge, another settlement turned vertical geography into a daily condition of life.

Kaymoor was effectively 2 towns occupying different elevations of the same mountain.

Kaymoor Top stood near the gorge rim.

Kaymoor Bottom lay roughly 800 ft below beside the railroad, mine facilities, and river.

Between them was an industrial incline engineered to move coal and material up and down a slope that seemed almost unreasonable for ordinary travel.

A long staircase provided another connection.

It contained more than 800 steps.

To modern visitors, the staircase is an ordeal.

To families who lived there, it was simply part of the town.

People climbed it because the places they needed to reach were separated vertically.

Children climbed.

Women carried groceries.

Workers moved between elevations.

The mine opened around the beginning of the 20th century and ultimately produced millions of tons of coal. At its height, hundreds of men depended upon the operation.

The lower level contained the machinery of extraction.

Coal emerged from the mountain and entered a system of tipples, conveyors, railcars, and loading structures that carried it into the wider market.

Above, domestic life occupied whatever land could be made usable.

Company-town rules shaped that life.

The owner, Low Moor Iron Company, attempted to control the social character of Kaymoor as thoroughly as it controlled industrial production. Local accounts preserve the unusual claim that the company resisted building both a saloon and a church, regarding each in its own way as a distraction from work.

The policy did not eliminate either alcohol or religion from the lives of miners.

It merely meant that residents traveled elsewhere for them.

Saturday excursions to larger communities became part of the rhythm of life.

Then men returned in time for another workweek.

The mine continued for more than 60 years.

When it closed in 1962, Kaymoor Bottom emptied with remarkable speed.

Without the mine there was little economic logic in remaining at the bottom of a deep gorge with minimal access and industrial structures no longer operating.

The facilities were abandoned.

Time worked unevenly on them.

Steel rusted.

Wood disappeared.

Concrete remained.

The National Park Service later preserved access to portions of the site, and visitors descending the long staircase pass remnants of equipment that once moved coal by the trainload.

Near the old mine facilities, a painted safety message survived far longer than the payroll that had placed it there.

Your family is depending on you.

Work safely.

The words remain unsettling precisely because the operation they addressed is gone.

No shift is beginning.

No foreman is waiting.

No man is carrying a lunch bucket toward the mine.

Only the warning remains, speaking to workers who disappeared decades ago.

Across the gorge, the ruins at Nuttallburg tell another version of the same story, though its history briefly intersected with one of the most famous industrialists in America.

John Nuttall, an English immigrant, established mining operations there in the 1870s, during the early development of the New River coalfield.

The settlement that grew around the mine took his name.

It occupied difficult country along the river, accessible because the Chesapeake & Ohio had opened the gorge to industrial traffic.

For almost half a century, Nuttallburg followed the familiar pattern.

Coal came from the mountain.

The railroad carried it away.

Families lived between those 2 facts.

Then, in 1920, Henry Ford bought the operation.

Ford’s interest was not sentimental.

He was attempting to build an industrial empire that depended as little as possible on outside suppliers.

His factories consumed enormous quantities of raw materials. Coal fueled industrial processes. Rubber, timber, iron ore, glass, transportation, and power were all potential links in a chain Ford preferred to control himself.

Nuttallburg offered coal.

Ford brought the same obsession with efficiency that had reshaped automobile manufacturing.

One of the most dramatic changes was a conveyor system extending roughly 1,385 ft down the mountainside.

Coal could move directly from the mine toward the railroad tipple below.

The structure was extraordinary in its day.

Much of its skeletal form remains visible today, a diagonal line of rusting steel descending through forest that has grown around it.

Ford could modernize machinery.

He could not control the railroad.

That problem mattered deeply to him.

The Chesapeake & Ohio determined freight rates and remained the essential carrier linking Nuttallburg with the markets and factories beyond the gorge.

Ford, accustomed to reshaping systems around his own requirements, found himself dependent upon a company he did not own.

By 1928 he sold the operation.

Nuttallburg continued under other ownership, but the long decline of many New River coal communities had begun.

Eventually the mine closed and the settlement emptied.

For decades, the structures deteriorated beneath the forest.

Then preservation changed the fate of the ruins.

The National Park Service stabilized important portions of the site in the early 21st century.

Unlike places where almost every building vanished, Nuttallburg still retains enough industrial fabric for a visitor to understand the relationship between mountain, mine, conveyor, tipple, and railroad.

One can stand among the remnants and read the entire economic logic of the town from the slope.

The coal began high.

Gravity helped move it down.

Rail carried it away.

People occupied the narrow spaces between.

Church steps survive.

Coke ovens survive.

Industrial structures remain.

The town’s residents do not.

Far from the New River Gorge, high in the mountains of West Virginia, the settlement of Spruce demonstrated how completely a railroad could create a community beyond the normal reach of roads.

Spruce stood at nearly 4,000 ft of elevation.

For a period it was among the highest substantial settlements in the eastern United States.

The environment was severe.

Winter arrived early and stayed.

Snow could accumulate deeply.

Cold settled into the high plateau.

Frost was possible at times when valleys far below were green with summer.

No conventional highway opened the town to the outside world.

The railroad was not merely the preferred means of travel.

For most purposes, it was the means.

Spruce existed because timber companies wanted the red spruce growing across the highlands.

At the beginning of the 20th century, railroad construction pushed into the plateau as part of the immense industrial logging system feeding pulp and lumber operations associated with Cass and downstream mills.

Where the rails went, workers followed.

A settlement developed for the people cutting, handling, and processing the timber.

Company houses stood in a landscape that only a few years earlier had been dense forest.

There was a store.

A school.

Boarding accommodations.

Buildings were heated against winters capable of making ordinary domestic life difficult.

The men did not go to Spruce because it offered convenient land or pleasant access.

They went because the railroad and timber company had placed employment there.

The surrounding forest was the bank from which the town made daily withdrawals.

Train after train carried away logs and pulpwood.

A landscape that had accumulated trees for generations was cut according to industrial schedules.

No town dependent upon that process could avoid a final calculation.

Eventually, the timber close enough to reach economically would be gone.

By the 1920s, the large-scale pulpwood operation at Spruce declined.

Employment fell.

Families left.

Buildings disappeared.

Heavy snow damaged abandoned structures.

Some were dismantled.

Others simply collapsed.

By the middle of the century, permanent community life had largely vanished.

The most unusual feature of Spruce’s afterlife is that modern roads never transformed the site.

A visitor cannot simply drive into the old town in the ordinary way.

The railroad remains the most evocative route.

Excursion trains traveling through the high country cross the meadow where Spruce once stood.

Passengers look from windows toward foundations, open grass, recovering forest, and the dark water of mountain streams stained the color of tea by organic matter.

The experience reverses the usual relationship between town and train.

Once, passengers stepped from the cars into a living community.

Now they remain aboard and pass through its absence.

The railroad survived as memory after the town it created disappeared.

Not every Appalachian railroad settlement began and ended as a purely industrial company town.

Elkmont, Tennessee, started in the familiar manner and then became something stranger.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Little River Lumber Company built a logging railroad into the Great Smoky Mountains.

Old-growth timber still covered vast areas of the slopes.

Rail made intensive logging possible.

Camps and settlements followed the tracks.

Elkmont developed as one of them.

At first, it was rough.

The place belonged to timber.

Men worked the mountains.

Logs came down.

A hotel and workers’ dwellings appeared near the rail line.

Then the same railroad that transported labor and lumber began carrying another cargo.

Visitors.

Families from Knoxville discovered that the logging line could deliver them into mountain country previously difficult to reach.

Weekend excursions became popular.

The industrial landscape acquired a recreational identity before the timber operation had even disappeared.

By 1912, wealthy visitors had established the Wonderland Hotel and summer cottage communities.

The contrast could be startling.

Loggers passed through a landscape being cut for profit while prosperous families arrived to enjoy the mountain air.

Fresh stumps and fashionable verandas could occupy the same valley.

Elkmont had become both company town and resort.

Then the creation of Great Smoky Mountains National Park changed the ownership of the entire region.

When the park was established in the 1930s, private property within its boundaries posed a problem.

The government acquired land while some cottage owners negotiated the right to retain temporary occupancy through leases.

Those agreements produced an extraordinary historical overlap.

The industrial town disappeared.

The railroad ceased operating.

The logging economy ended.

Yet private families continued spending summers in some Elkmont cottages for decades.

Leases endured into the late 20th century.

For a time, Elkmont was a ghost town that was not entirely empty.

Children played near buildings surviving from another economic era.

Automobiles and modern appliances arrived in a settlement created by a logging railroad.

Some families occupied summer cottages into a period when the original lumber camps belonged to distant memory.

Eventually the leases expired.

The remaining structures entered a difficult period.

Should the park remove them and allow forest to reclaim the valley?

Should they be restored?

Which buildings mattered enough to save?

Some deteriorated beyond recovery.

The famous Wonderland Hotel eventually collapsed.

Others were stabilized or restored.

Today Elkmont occupies an unusual place among Appalachian abandoned towns because disappearance and preservation exist beside one another.

Visitors can walk through former cottage districts where renovated structures stand near empty foundations.

The old railroad grade has become part of the recreational landscape.

And during certain weeks of early summer, people gather near Elkmont for a phenomenon that has nothing to do with industry.

Synchronous fireflies flash through the darkness in coordinated patterns.

Crowds travel into a valley once entered by loggers and wealthy excursionists to stand quietly under trees and watch light move through the forest.

The railroad is gone.

The mill is gone.

The original labor town has vanished.

The mountains have acquired another use.

Yet beneath the present landscape remains the central pattern repeated across Appalachia.

Track made access possible.

Resource extraction made settlement profitable.

When the economic purpose changed, the town either changed with it or disappeared.

Most were not as fortunate as Elkmont.

Most had no second life waiting.

# Part 2

Proctor, North Carolina, stood where Hazel Creek enters what is now Fontana Lake.

At its height, more than 1,000 people lived in the surrounding community.

There were schools and churches, stores and houses, a theater, and organized baseball. The place possessed the ordinary complexity of a town that expected tomorrow to resemble today.

Its economic center was timber.

The W. M. Ritter Lumber Company operated a large band mill and built the railroad infrastructure required to reach the forests of the Hazel Creek watershed.

Between roughly 1910 and 1928, immense quantities of timber left the region.

Contemporary estimates placed the harvest in the hundreds of millions of board feet.

Logging railroads pushed into tributary valleys.

Crews cut slopes that had never before experienced industrial logging on that scale.

The company did not need the forest to remain a forest.

It needed trees to remain only until the last economically useful log had been removed.

When the large timber operation ended, Proctor did not immediately disappear.

That is important.

Company towns were vulnerable when the company left, but communities sometimes developed enough independent life to survive.

Families remained around Hazel Creek.

They farmed.

They fished.

They maintained churches and cemeteries.

The lumber boom ended, but home did not automatically end with it.

Then the federal government altered the landscape.

During World War II, the Tennessee Valley Authority built Fontana Dam.

The project served the urgent demand for electric power in a wartime industrial economy.

When the dam closed, water rose behind it.

Roads disappeared beneath the reservoir.

Communities along the north shore became difficult or impossible to reach by their traditional routes.

Residents were bought out and relocated.

The removals produced a promise that outlived the families’ homes.

A replacement road was supposed to be constructed along the north shore of the new lake, restoring access toward the old settlements and, especially, the mountain cemeteries where generations of local families were buried.

Part of the road was built.

Then construction stopped.

Environmental complications, difficult terrain, costs, and changing federal priorities left the route unfinished.

The abandoned section became known locally as the Road to Nowhere.

For former residents and their descendants, the phrase carries more weight than its darkly humorous sound suggests.

The problem was not simply transportation.

A landscape can remain part of a family long after the house is gone.

Graves remained above the water.

Church sites remained in memory.

Old property lines remained meaningful even when trees reclaimed them.

People who had been removed still wanted to return.

For decades, descendants crossed Fontana Lake by boat or traveled with assistance from the National Park Service to reach cemeteries on the remote north shore.

They came not to visit a surviving town but to maintain relationships with the dead.

In the forest around Hazel Creek, traces of Proctor remain.

Mill foundations survive.

Fragments of industrial structures lie beneath vegetation.

Graves endure on hillsides.

The reservoir covers portions of the old transportation world.

A promise of permanent access remains symbolized by a highway ending abruptly in mountain country.

Proctor demonstrates that a place need not be erased by industry alone.

Sometimes a town survived the departure of the company only to be displaced by another vision of national development.

In Pennsylvania, the town of Wehrum revealed a more direct form of corporate disappearance.

The Lackawanna Coal & Coke Company constructed Wehrum in Indiana County beginning around 1901.

This was not intended to be a temporary scattering of shacks.

The company laid out a planned settlement.

Approximately 250 houses were constructed.

There was a bank.

A hotel.

A school.

A company store.

Streets formed a recognizable grid.

At its height, roughly 1,000 people lived there.

Many were immigrants.

Italian, Polish, Hungarian, and other European families entered the Appalachian coalfields after crossing the Atlantic in search of work and permanence.

A planned town with substantial houses could appear to offer exactly that.

It was named for company officer Henry Wehrum.

The name itself advertised ownership.

The coal operation, however, was never as stable as the streets suggested.

Mining presented constant risks.

Labor relations were difficult.

Explosions, strikes, market conditions, and the economics of particular seams affected the future of the town.

Everything depended upon the mine remaining worth operating.

When the company closed the operation permanently in 1929, Wehrum lost the foundation beneath its apparent permanence.

The company did not preserve the empty houses in the hope that some new economy might arrive.

Buildings had material value.

They could be dismantled.

Lumber could be sold.

Fixtures could be removed.

Rails could be lifted.

The town was consumed a second time, not by coal mining but by salvage.

Within a few years, what had been a community of about 1,000 residents had become foundations in weeds.

Sidewalks continued beside lots where houses no longer stood.

Occasional fragments of municipal infrastructure survived without the town they once served.

A lone fire hydrant in brush became one of the most memorable images associated with the site.

The hydrant seemed absurd until one remembered that it had not been placed in wilderness.

Wilderness had returned around it.

The cemetery survived more completely than much of the built environment.

Headstones on the hill carried the names of families who had traveled enormous distances to reach Wehrum.

The town’s commercial buildings were dismantled.

The mine stopped.

The railroad vanished.

The dead remained.

In a place built by migrants, the cemetery became the last enduring neighborhood.

Ricketts, farther east in Pennsylvania, belonged to timber rather than coal but followed an equally severe economic timetable.

Around the turn of the 20th century, the town developed near the border of Sullivan and Wyoming counties around the operations of the Trexler and Turrell Lumber Company.

The plateau forests offered hemlock and hardwood.

The mill consumed them continuously.

For perhaps 2 decades, Ricketts was noisy, crowded, and alive.

Nearly 1,000 residents depended directly or indirectly on logging and milling.

There were company houses.

A hotel.

A school.

Rail sidings.

Workshops.

The rough social life associated with lumber camps appeared there as well.

Men worked dangerous physical jobs during the week and spent wages rapidly when the opportunity arose.

Alcohol, fights, accidents, and the improvised justice of isolated industrial communities became part of local memory.

Yet everyone who understood forestry could see the ending approaching.

A coal seam might be uncertain underground.

A stand of timber could be counted.

Logging companies knew approximately how much merchantable wood surrounded a mill and how quickly crews were cutting it.

The mathematics of Ricketts contained its death from the beginning.

Trees that required generations to mature were being removed on an industrial schedule measured in years.

Around 1913, the mill finished its final production.

Machinery had greater future value elsewhere.

It was taken out.

Families left.

What remained was vulnerable.

Fire moved through portions of the abandoned settlement and surrounding slash.

Dry timber debris left by logging created fuel.

Structures burned.

No serious rebuilding followed because the economic reason for rebuilding had disappeared.

The land itself changed hands.

The stripped plateau eventually passed into public ownership.

Second-growth forest replaced the industrial clearings.

The transformation became so complete that modern visitors can walk through areas once occupied by buildings and fail to recognize the evidence around them.

A depression may be a cellar hole.

A line of stones may be a foundation.

An apparently natural opening may once have been a street.

Forest creates an illusion of timelessness.

It encourages a visitor to believe the trees have always stood there.

At Ricketts, many have not.

They are successors.

The first forest became lumber.

The town consumed it and then disappeared.

The second forest grew across both.

The stories of Wehrum and Ricketts illuminate a larger truth about the company-town landscape.

At the height of Appalachian coal industrialization, enormous numbers of workers lived in houses owned by the same companies that employed them.

In parts of West Virginia, company housing dominated entire mining districts.

A family’s job and home could therefore depend upon a single institution.

The arrangement gave employers power extending far beyond the workplace.

A miner who lost his position might lose his house.

A strike was not simply a refusal to work.

It could threaten shelter, access to the company store, medical care, and the stability of an entire household.

The classic American ideal of economic independence through property ownership rarely applied cleanly in such places.

Residents created homes in company buildings.

They planted flowers.

Raised children.

Held funerals.

Made neighbors.

Built lives.

Yet the land and structures might remain somebody else’s assets.

That distinction became cruelly clear when an operation closed.

The family could love the porch.

The company could still sell the boards.

Widen, West Virginia, represented company control in one of its most complete forms.

The town lay deep in Clay County at the end of the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad.

The short line existed largely to serve the coal operations developed by Joseph Gaylord Bradley.

Isolation magnified his authority.

Widen became, in effect, a private industrial domain.

Bradley promoted the settlement as a model company town.

Housing was considered better than in many comparable camps.

There were recreational facilities.

A swimming pool.

A baseball field.

A YMCA.

The company presented order and welfare as proof that outside labor organizations were unnecessary.

One institution Bradley did not welcome was the union.

Widen remained fiercely nonunion through decades in which West Virginia coalfields were repeatedly shaken by labor conflict.

The town became an argument embodied in buildings.

Bradley’s position was that a benevolent operator could provide for workers without surrendering control to organized labor.

Union supporters regarded the same system as paternalism backed by economic power.

Those competing visions eventually produced violence.

Labor disputes, especially during the early 1950s, brought shootings, dynamite, intimidation, and death into the hollow.

The apparent model community revealed the coercion beneath its stability.

Yet Widen also possessed an industrial feature that made it famous far beyond Clay County among railroad enthusiasts.

Steam survived there.

Major American railroads converted rapidly to diesel locomotives after World War II.

Steam engines disappeared from ordinary service with extraordinary speed.

By the 1950s and 1960s, enthusiasts traveled long distances to find places where steam still worked rather than performed.

The Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad became one of those places.

Its locomotives hauled actual coal in daily service years after steam had become unusual elsewhere.

Photographers came into the hills specifically to see them.

For a time, Widen seemed preserved by isolation.

The modern railroad world changed outside while steam locomotives still worked the local line.

But technological nostalgia could not save the mine.

Bradley sold his interests in 1959.

The new ownership closed the mine in 1963.

The company system collapsed rapidly afterward.

Some residences survived and the name Widen never vanished entirely from the map, but the industrial kingdom disappeared.

The locomotives went elsewhere, including museums.

The tipple and active mine ceased to define the hollow.

Bradley’s carefully managed town outlived his control by only a few years.

In Kentucky, Blue Heron provides a different way to understand the vanished company town because its ruins were deliberately interpreted rather than simply stabilized.

Residents did not generally call the settlement Blue Heron during its active years.

To the miners of the Stearns Coal & Lumber Company, it was Mine 18.

The numerical name was appropriate.

The place existed as part of a system.

It stood along the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River, connected to the outside world by the Kentucky & Tennessee Railway.

Coal determined the settlement’s geometry.

The tipple dominated the operation, a large structure where coal could be sorted and loaded above the rail line.

Around it stood the familiar components of a company camp.

Houses.

A store.

A church.

School facilities.

All were linked by the company railroad.

Mine 18 opened in 1937.

Its coal seams never produced the kind of wealth found in some older Appalachian districts.

The operation struggled.

Men nevertheless built lives there for a quarter century.

Families cooked meals.

Children played near industrial track.

Women managed homes in a landscape where the employer owned much of what surrounded them.

The mine closed in 1962.

The familiar process began immediately.

Useful material was salvaged.

Buildings deteriorated.

Some disappeared.

For 2 decades, the place moved toward the fate of other abandoned camps.

Then the National Park Service chose an unusual form of interpretation.

Instead of attempting to reconstruct an entire false village from modern lumber, designers created what became known as ghost structures.

Steel frames mark the outlines of buildings that once stood at Mine 18.
