Old World Closets Weren’t Built For Clothes — The Dark Reason They Were Only Inches Deep

Walk into a house built before 1920 and go upstairs.

Ignore the staircase for a moment, even if the banister has been polished smooth by generations of hands. Ignore the tall windows, the plaster moldings, the doors thick enough to feel substantial when they close. Pass through the upstairs hall and enter one of the bedrooms.

Then open the closet.

Before looking at what has been stored there, before noticing the old shelf brackets or the paint layered over earlier paint, take a tape measure and place its end against the back wall. Draw the tape toward the inside face of the door.

The number may seem wrong.

Sometimes 24 in, though often less.

To anyone accustomed to a modern bedroom closet, the proportions can seem almost comic. A present-day coat hanger barely fits. Broad jackets turn slightly on the rod. Sleeves brush the door. Winter coats appear too large for the space supposedly built to hold them.

It is tempting to dismiss the whole thing as another inconvenience of old construction.

People were smaller then, someone says.

They owned fewer clothes.

Builders did not know better.

Closets were an afterthought.

The explanations are comfortable because they make the past simple. They allow the narrow cavity in the wall to become one more charming defect in an otherwise handsome old house.

But the house itself argues against that explanation.

These were not necessarily crude buildings. Many were made with a degree of craft that has survived long after the people who raised them disappeared. Their ceilings might rise 12 ft above the floor. Their staircases could be built from solid hardwood. Their doors might approach 2 in in thickness. Hand-worked plaster could frame the ceilings. Masonry walls could remain straight after more than a century of weather, repairs, winters, summers, settlement, and neglect.

The people who built such houses understood dimensions.

They knew what an inch was worth.

They knew what 12 in could do to a room.

And yet, when they came to the closet, they often stopped at 20.

That is the detail that changes the question.

The shallow closet was not necessarily a failure to provide enough space. In many cases, it was the result of deciding exactly how much space was enough.

To see why, the modern meaning of the word closet has to be set aside.

Today the word usually describes storage. It means a recess, alcove, cabinet, or small enclosed area where possessions are placed out of sight. Bedrooms have closets for clothing. Hallways have closets for coats. Utility closets hold cleaning supplies and appliances. The human body approaches the closet, reaches into it, and withdraws something.

The closet itself is not ordinarily considered a place to remain.

That was not always true.

In 18th-century houses, the word might describe a small private chamber attached to a larger one. It could be a place to read a letter without company looking over one’s shoulder, to pray, to keep accounts, to dress, to secure valuables, to conduct business, or to speak with another person beyond the hearing of the rest of the household.

Some closets had windows.

Some had finished woodwork.

Some could contain a chair.

A few might even have a fireplace.

A person could enter such a space, close the door, and remain there.

The difference was not merely one of size. It represented another understanding of domestic life. Privacy itself could occupy square footage.

Clothing, meanwhile, did not require the architectural arrangement now taken for granted. Garments could be stored in chests and trunks. Linen could be folded into drawers. Clothing could hang from pegs. Wealthier households might rely on freestanding presses and wardrobes that stood openly inside the room.

Storage was often furniture rather than architecture.

That distinction explains more than the absence of deep built-in closets. It also helps dispose of one of the most persistent legends attached to old American houses: the story that closets were scarce because colonial governments taxed them as additional rooms.

The claim survives because it sounds plausible. Old buildings have few closets. Taxes are unpopular. The two facts seem to fit together neatly.

But researchers associated with Colonial Williamsburg have found no evidence of a special closet tax in the original 13 colonies.

The mundane truth is more useful than the legend.

People stored their possessions differently.

At Mount Vernon, historians have identified a rare 18th-century clothes closet partly because the surviving physical features make its purpose unusually clear. Shelves occupy the space. A pegboard provides places from which garments could hang.

There is no need for a conventional modern rod filled with shoulder-shaped hangers.

That small difference in hardware has large architectural consequences.

A coat placed flat against a wall on a peg occupies remarkably little depth. Its body rests close to the plaster or timber behind it. The garment does not project far into the room. It needs enough clearance for cloth, perhaps for layers of fabric, but not the full width demanded by a hanger held perpendicular to the wall.

Put the same coat on a shoulder-shaped hanger and rotate it 90 degrees.

The problem changes.

The garment now extends sideways into the closet. The hanger determines the minimum useful depth. A wider coat needs more room still. A closed door creates another fixed boundary. Suddenly every inch between back wall and door matters.

Storage technology determines architecture.

The room follows the object used inside it.

During the late 19th century and the opening years of the 20th, that object began to change.

The modern garment hanger did not arrive fully formed in a single moment, but recognizable shoulder-shaped designs were being patented by 1902 and 1903. By 1904, wardrobe trunks were being designed around hanging compartments equipped with rods and garment hangers. Clothing that had once been folded, stacked, placed in drawers, or hung flat from wall pegs was increasingly capable of being suspended in rows.

A change like that might seem to demand a simple architectural response.

Closets should have grown deeper.

If garments were moving outward from the wall, then the wall should have moved outward with them.

Instead, another movement was taking place.

The closet was becoming more exact.

More calculated.

More mechanical.

And, in important cases, more compressed.

The language of the period begins to reveal the shift. Rooms continued to be described in feet because human beings occupied them. Bedrooms had lengths and widths. Parlors had dimensions. Dining rooms were laid out as spaces through which people moved.

Storage units increasingly appeared in inches.

20 in deep.

24 in wide.

28 in wide.

14 in minimum depth.

30 in of extension.

The change in units was not accidental.

Feet belonged to rooms.

Inches belonged to mechanisms.

An early 20th-century building catalog for the BATS system of wardrobes provides one of the clearest examples. The units were promoted to architects, contractors, and people building new houses. Their dimensions were remarkably compact. Built-in wardrobes could be designed around a depth of roughly 20 in. Individual units might occupy only 24 to 28 in of width.

And when the depth became too restrictive for a person to move conveniently within the storage space, the designers did not necessarily enlarge it.

They changed the hardware.

Mechanisms allowed garments to be pulled outward toward the person standing in the room.

That single innovation reveals the entire logic.

The builder had not created a small room.

The room had been removed.

The human body no longer needed to enter the closet. Instead, the contents of the closet were made to come to the human body.

What had once been a chamber became a device.

The BATS system promoted this transformation as an advantage. Large conventional closets could be described as an inefficient use of valuable floor area. Why surrender several feet of a bedroom to a compartment a person occupied only briefly? If clothing could be stored within a cabinet only slightly deeper than the width required by the garments themselves, then the extra volume became unnecessary.

The system could promise substantial capacity while taking remarkably little from the floor plan.

From the standpoint of efficiency, the reasoning was impeccable.

A person did not need to stand among coats.

A person merely needed access to coats.

Once those 2 requirements were separated, the geometry changed completely.

The closet no longer had to accommodate both the possessions and the owner at the same time.

Only the possessions remained inside.

Seen from that perspective, the strange proportions of old closets begin to lose their strangeness. A 20-in closet ceases to look like a badly designed room because it was not really being treated as a room at all.

It was a machine built into a wall.

Machines are rarely given more volume than their function requires.

They are reduced.

Refined.

Standardized.

Every unnecessary inch becomes a potential saving.

That still leaves the deeper question.

Why had the saving become important enough to matter?

Why would architects, contractors, manufacturers, and developers care so much about 12 in of depth?

The answer lies beyond the bedroom.

It lies in the city.

During the final decades of the 19th century and the opening years of the 20th, housing economics were being transformed by industrial growth. Cities expanded rapidly. Populations increased. Every square foot began to carry a financial consequence that could be calculated more precisely than before.

The pressure did not fall only on the poorest housing. It spread through the culture of building itself. Space increasingly became something to be measured, allocated, justified, and priced.

At roughly the same time, reformers and governments were beginning to insist that some dimensions could not be left entirely to the discretion of landlords and developers.

New York provides a useful example.

Housing reforms after 1901 established minimum floor areas for rooms in tenement buildings. One principal room was required to provide at least 120 sq ft. Other living rooms generally required at least 70 sq ft. Regulations addressed minimum dimensions, ceiling heights, light, and ventilation.

These laws did not attempt to guarantee luxury.

They attempted to establish a floor beneath which human habitation should not be compressed.

And the categories mattered.

Living rooms mattered because people lived in them.

Bedrooms mattered.

Light mattered.

Air mattered.

Habitable space was the concern.

The closet was different.

A closet was not where the law expected a person to live.

Its cost in space was visible.

A built-in closet hid that cost inside the architecture.

From the bedroom, the result could feel like a gain. The floor looked clear. The walls appeared orderly. Storage was provided without a massive wooden cabinet intruding into the room.

The house seemed to contain the solution.

But that solution also transferred control.

A freestanding wardrobe belonged to the household.

For centuries, much domestic storage had been flexible because it traveled with the household. Chests passed through generations. Trunks moved from one residence to another. Clothes presses stood where families decided they should stand. A wardrobe could be bought because the household needed more capacity.

Storage reflected the possessions of the people.

Built-in storage reversed the relationship.

Now the possessions had to conform to the dimensions of the building.

The number returns again and again because manufacturers were learning that an astonishing amount could be made to happen inside a depth that small.

Telescoping carriers could extend garments toward the room.

Special hangers could alter how clothing sat within the compartment.

The goal was not necessarily to make the closet more comfortable to occupy.

These phrases seem modern because they remain common in discussions of contemporary apartments and furniture. Yet the calculation is far older.

Take a human requirement.

Identify the space historically allocated to it.

Reduce that space.

Then develop a mechanism that makes the reduction feel like an improvement.

The person loses volume but gains convenience.

The exchange can be difficult to recognize because the new mechanism often works.

The BATS wardrobe systems did not need to be useless in order to represent compression. On the contrary, they had to be useful. If they had failed completely, nobody would have adopted them.

Their efficiency was what made the reduction possible.

The closet did not grow smaller despite innovation.

It could grow smaller because of innovation.

At the same time, the contents of those closets were changing.

Mass-produced clothing expanded.

Ready-to-wear garments became increasingly common.

Department stores grew into major institutions of urban commerce.

Standard sizes became more familiar.

Manufacturing created a world in which clothing itself could become more uniform.

The hanger and the closet were part of the same movement.

Standardized garments encouraged standardized methods of storage. Standardized storage encouraged predictable architectural dimensions. The room did not need to be designed around the peculiar chest, trunk, or clothes press owned by a specific family. Instead, a contractor could assume that clothing would hang from something resembling the clothing storage system used by everyone else.

Possessions and architecture began moving toward each other.

That convergence created the modern closet.

It also created a problem that still survives inside old houses.

Take a contemporary broad-shouldered jacket and place it inside a genuinely shallow built-in closet from the period.

The geometry becomes immediately visible.

The hanger may sit at an angle.

The shoulders turn.

One sleeve presses against the closed door.

Heavy clothing bunches near the front.

People respond in practical ways. They buy narrower hangers. They rotate hanging rods so clothing faces outward rather than sideways. They remove closet doors. They replace hanging storage with shelves. They install hooks. They surrender and put a wardrobe back in the bedroom.

The irony is almost perfect.

A piece of furniture once displaced by architectural storage returns because the architectural storage is no longer adequate for the possessions it was meant to contain.

When this happens, the old builder is blamed.

He did not understand.

He was careless.

His clients must not have owned many clothes.

Sometimes those explanations contain part of the truth. Households did own different wardrobes. Garment types changed. Wealth mattered. Building practices varied by city, region, class, and period. No single explanation applies to every closet ever constructed before 1920.

But surviving catalogs and designed systems prevent a general dismissal of shallow storage as mere ignorance.

At least some builders and manufacturers knew exactly what they were doing.

They recorded the dimensions.

They designed mechanisms for those dimensions.

They advertised the compactness.

They calculated capacity.

They treated depth as a problem to be solved deliberately.

There is nothing accidental about a dimension that appears in a product catalog beside hardware designed specifically to make that dimension workable.

The misunderstanding begins when the closet is assumed to have been designed around the person who would eventually open its door.

Increasingly, it was designed around the minimum structure necessary to perform the function named closet.

That is a different standard.

It does not ask, What would be spacious?

It asks, What would work?

If garments can hang in 20 in, then 20 in is sufficient.

If the owner can pull those garments outward, there is no need to make the cavity deep enough for the owner to step inside.

How much kitchen floor is actually needed to perform the tasks assigned to the kitchen?

The word actually becomes important.

A generous dimension assumes that space has value even when it is temporarily unused.

An optimized dimension treats unused space as waste.

Those 2 ideas produce very different houses.

The older private closet had room for the person because the person was part of its purpose. A chair might belong there. A window might belong there. The enclosed volume could justify itself through privacy alone.

The modern storage closet could not justify such emptiness.

A person standing among hanging clothes represented, in the new calculation, unused floor.

The body did not need to be there.

So the body was removed.

The transformation can be traced through the word itself.

Closet.

The syllables remained unchanged while the physical meaning narrowed.

A modern reader encounters the word closet in an old document and imagines a narrow storage enclosure because that is what the word now means. But architecture preserves a more complicated history. The closet could shrink without acquiring a new name. The name simply followed the shrinking object.

By the time the transformation was complete, people could forget that a closet had ever been somewhere one entered for reasons other than choosing a garment.

The private room became storage.

Storage became built-in furniture.

Built-in furniture became a standardized cavity.

And because each stage still carried the same name, the loss of space did not necessarily look like a loss of anything.

That may be the most important feature of the transition.

Visible deprivation provokes resistance.

Invisible substitution often does not.

Remove a freestanding wardrobe from a bedroom and give nothing in return, and the missing storage is obvious.

It shows how architects increasingly classified interior volume.

The dining room was a place.

The built-in wardrobe was a unit.

Units could be manufactured.

No secret group of builders has to meet and agree that people deserve smaller closets.

Market pressure is capable of producing the same result through ordinary decisions repeated thousands of times.

One developer discovers that tenants accept a shallower storage space.

A manufacturer develops hardware that makes it usable.

An architect incorporates the idea into another plan.

A contractor becomes accustomed to the dimension.

Buyers see built-in wardrobes as a sign of modern construction.

Competitors copy what sells.

The exceptional dimension becomes familiar.

The familiar dimension becomes standard.

Eventually the standard no longer needs explanation.

That is how architecture changes most of the time.

Not through a single command.

Through repetition.

Through cost.

Through imitation.

Through small adjustments that become permanent before anyone thinks to ask what came before them.

There is something easy to miss in the phrase wasted space.

Space itself cannot be wasted in the same way food, fuel, timber, or money can be wasted. An empty corner does not disappear because nobody stands in it. A broad hallway continues to exist whether 1 person uses it or 20. A dressing room remains a room even when the occupant spends only a few minutes there each day.

Calling space waste is therefore not a neutral description.

It is a judgment about value.

It says the empty volume could have been assigned elsewhere.

It could have been converted into rentable area.

It could have reduced construction cost.

It could have enlarged another room.

It could have permitted another unit on a floor.

It could have been sold.

Once this way of thinking becomes normal, architecture changes from a collection of places into an arrangement of competing claims.

Every inch granted to one function is an inch denied to another.

A deep closet is no longer simply pleasant storage.

It is a cost.

The 20-in wardrobe makes sense because the clothing still fits and the missing depth can be put to another use.

The calculation can be repeated until almost every domestic space approaches a threshold.

Enough room to open the door.

Enough clearance to use the fixture.

Enough width to pass.

Enough height to satisfy regulation.

Enough storage to satisfy expectation.

Enough light to meet the rule.

Enough air.

Enough.

The word appears harmless.

It may be the most powerful word in the modern floor plan.

For the builder working under economic pressure, enough is the point at which further generosity stops producing an adequate return.

For the resident, enough is something more difficult.

The word depends on who is measuring.

This is why the shallow closet should not be treated merely as an antiquarian curiosity.

It is a small physical record of a larger transformation in the meaning of domestic space.

The old private closet had justified its existence because a person used it as a place.

The compressed built-in closet justified itself because it performed a task.

Its emptiness could be useful.

Pray.

Close a door.

The modern storage recess had no such permission.

Its emptiness was evidence that it had been built too large.

Put more shelving in it.

Narrow it.

Make the hanging system pull outward.

Use the depth more efficiently.

The idea is not uniquely cruel or uniquely benevolent. It belongs to the same culture of invention that made mass housing more practical, standardized construction more efficient, storage more convenient, and household goods easier to organize.

The unsettling quality lies in the direction of the optimization.

Technology was capable of making the small space work.

That success made the small space easier to accept.

A person confronted with a 20-in cavity and no means of hanging garments would complain about the cavity.

Give the same person a telescoping carrier, and the complaint changes.

The device is clever.

The clothes are accessible.

The doors close.

The system functions.

The question of the missing 12 in quietly disappears.

That is the darker lesson contained in ordinary domestic technology.

An innovation can improve the experience of a reduction without reversing the reduction itself.

Look at the staircase.

Look at the doors.

Look at the roof framing.

Look at the masonry.

Look at the plaster laid smooth without modern power tools.
