You always said a secret grows teeth in the dark.
I had said that to him once, years earlier, after discovering he had hidden a medical bill beneath the seat of his truck because he did not want me to worry.
But the phrase had not started with me.
My father used it. He claimed he had learned it from Miss Odessa Freeman, the librarian who taught him in a one-room school outside Ashford.

“Was Isaiah Freeman married?”
“Twice. His second wife was named Rebecca.”
“Children?”

The words struck me like a slap.
“He did what?”
Leonard opened a folder and showed me a copy of a letter bearing Daniel’s signature. The letter requested a meeting to discuss “potential conveyance of access and mineral interests.”
For a moment, the room blurred.
Daniel had investigated the covenant. Daniel had hidden papers. Daniel had lied about his trips to the ridge.

Leonard watched my face.

The farms along the valley depended on shallow wells and overloaded ponds. By August, cattle stood beneath trees with their ribs beginning to show.
My damaged bottomland suffered with the rest.
