The third folder was photographs.
Vivian’s silver SUV parked outside my parents’ house in the dark.

Again and again.
The fourth held one piece of paper.
A sworn affidavit from Loretta Quinn, the woman who had been in my mother’s kitchen on September 11, 2023.
She had heard Vivian say:
“If you don’t sign those papers, I will find that boy of yours. I will find him, and I will make sure he pays for what you took from me.”
At the bottom of the box was one more envelope.
In my mother’s handwriting.

My father took one step forward, and his cane nearly slipped on the gravel. My mother caught his elbow without looking, the way you steady someone you have been steadying for a long time.
I stopped two feet from them.
My mother was crying.

“We’re home, son,” my father said.
His voice broke clean in half on the word son.

The Bronco still sits in the barn.
