A 13-YEAR-OLD KNOCKED ON A BIKER CLUBHOUSE DOOR AFTER MIDNIGHT AND WHISPERED, “THEY DON’T WANT ME ANYMORE”

The first thing Detective Mara Vance remembered about Daniel Mercer was how calmly he described the worst morning of his life. His wife had stopped breathing beside him, yet he could tell police exactly when she took painkillers, what she ate, and which door he unlocked for paramedics. What he could not remember was the name of a single movie they had supposedly watched together. At first, that meant nothing. Three weeks later, it meant almost everything.

I remember the woman on our couch more clearly than I remember what I said to the police. She was wearing one of my husband’s sweatshirts, her shoes were beside the fireplace, and when I told her to get out of my house, she looked at him instead of me. Daniel kept saying it was complicated. Then an officer noticed something none of us had been arguing about: the dried blood beneath the woman’s left thumbnail. By midnight, nobody was arguing about who had permission to be in the house anymore.
