In the spring of 1874, when the dogwoods had begun to pale the wooded slopes of southern Missouri and the creeks still ran high from winter rain, John and Eliza Credle brought their children into Draycott Bend.
They came with a wagon, 2 horses, a few pieces of furniture, seed corn, hand tools, bedding, cooking iron, and most of what remained of their savings. The cabin waiting for them stood at the eastern end of the hollow, 2 rooms beneath a low roof, with a limestone chimney and a porch facing west toward a narrow strip of bottomland.

That mattered.
The Civil War had ended 9 years earlier, though in some parts of the Ozarks peace had arrived slowly. Guerrilla bands, Union patrols, Confederate sympathizers, bushwhackers and retaliatory raids had passed through the region until whole families learned to sleep with rifles beside their beds. Farms had burned. Men had vanished. Roads had become dangerous after dark. Some settlements never recovered.
By 1874, people were returning.
Others came for the first time, willing to trade isolation for acreage.
The Credles were the 4th family to settle in Draycott Bend that year.
By autumn, they were the only ones left.
The other families did not die.
No epidemic passed through the hollow. No flood carried away the cabins. No courthouse record described a land dispute severe enough to drive several households out together. They did not sell their livestock or advertise their claims. They did not load wagons and head west in the ordinary manner of people who had decided that Missouri had disappointed them.
They simply left.
The Yokum family departed so quickly that a neighbor entering their cabin the following morning found clothing still hanging outside and a pot of beans on the stove.
The beans were warm.
A milk cow remained in its pen.
Tools leaned against the wall of the shed.
A child’s shoe had been left beside the door.
Whatever decision had been made in that house had not been made leisurely.
For years afterward, the explanation was that the Ozarks were hard country and that hard country defeated people. It was a useful explanation because it required nothing further. Homesteaders abandoned claims all the time. Poor soil, sickness, isolation, debt, quarrels and fear sent families away from frontier settlements in every direction.
Yet private letters written after the departures preserved another explanation.
The families described noises beneath the ground.
They described movement near the northern bluff after sundown.
More than 1 writer used almost the same phrase for the sensation that troubled them most: the feeling that something below the hollow knew when they were awake.
The geography of Draycott Bend made such fears easier to dismiss and harder to escape.
The southern Missouri Ozarks are built on soluble stone. Limestone and dolomite lie beneath the ridges in enormous beds, fractured by water over spans of time too large to imagine usefully. Rain enters cracks. Creeks vanish into openings. Springs emerge miles from the places where the water first went underground.
From above, the country appears solid.
It is not.
Beneath the hills lie cavities, passages, chambers, sinkholes and underground streams. Missouri has thousands of documented caves, and even now the recorded number cannot account for every opening hidden by brush, soil, private land and inaccessible terrain.
In the 1870s, nobody pretended to know them all.
The landscape gave little warning.
A man could walk across a ridge for years without knowing that 30 ft beneath his boots ran a passage wide enough to stand in. A tree could grow for a century above a void. A spring might emerge from the foot of a bluff with no visible indication of where its water had traveled.
The hollows were where settlers wanted to live because hollows held water and offered the nearest thing the Ozarks provided to flat land. They were sheltered from hard wind and close to timber.
They were also where the hills opened.
Draycott Bend took its name from Thomas Draycott, a fur trader and occasional prospector who had established a small trading post there before the war. Little survived about him beyond scattered property references and a few legal disputes. He seems to have selected the place for obvious reasons. A spring flowed all year from the foot of the northern bluff, and the soil along the creek could support corn and garden crops.
The bluff itself rose behind the spring in gray shelves partly obscured by oak, hickory and walnut.
What Draycott knew about it was uncertain.
What later settlers learned was that it was hollow.
The unusual thing was not that the bluff contained caves.
It was that someone appeared to have hidden the entrances.
There were no great black openings visible from the bottomland. No mouths in the limestone where cattle sheltered from rain. The access points later described in letters and journals were narrow and deliberately difficult to see.
One lay behind loose stone that resembled a natural fall.
Another was said to exist near the bottom of a sinkhole where vines and leaf litter concealed the rock.

In September 1874, approximately 3 weeks before his family abandoned Draycott Bend, one of his hogs failed to return. Yokum followed tracks toward the northern bluff and spent part of an afternoon searching among fallen timber and limestone shelves.
Behind what appeared to be a collapsed section of rock, he noticed darkness.
He moved several stones.

The opening was narrow enough that he had to turn his shoulders to enter.
Yokum did not go far.
In a letter written afterward to his brother in Springfield, he struggled less with what he had heard than with the passage itself.
The walls were wrong.
Natural limestone in the region cracked, dissolved and weathered irregularly. Its surfaces undulated. Water left pockets and seams. Mineral deposits formed curtains, knobs and rough ledges.
The walls in front of Yokum appeared smooth.

The passage continued beyond the available daylight.
From somewhere deeper came a smell of damp mineral and iron.

John crawled beneath the house with a lantern.

The soil beneath the cabin appeared undisturbed.
The sound returned the next night.
A scrape.
A pause.
Then tapping.
The rhythm continued for several minutes before stopping.
Later it resumed.
By late November, the pattern had become familiar.
It usually began around 8 or 9 in the evening and persisted intermittently until shortly before dawn. There could be silence for 10 minutes, sometimes 15, then the tapping would start again.
At other times they heard something Eliza could describe only as a low chant.
There were no words she could recognize.
The sound seemed to come through the ground rather than through the air.
John eventually went beneath the house again and pressed his ear directly against the soil.
When he returned inside, he said very little.
The noise was real.
He believed it came from deep below.

More important, the documents never existed together.
Yokum’s letter remained family correspondence.
Harland separated the strange material from his official survey.
Eliza’s diary remained private and was later preserved only in fragments transcribed by a local historian, Maud Atkins, who was collecting Ozark folklore in 1908.

Hensley found the payment noteworthy enough to mention in his journal.
The men remained at Draycott Bend for approximately 3 weeks.
One returned to the ferry for additional rope and candles.
His hands and clothing were coated in fine white powder.

Their clothing, when clothing could be distinguished, consisted of long plain garments in dull brown or gray.
No bright cloth.
No metal buckles catching moonlight.
Nothing that separated the body clearly from the stone and woods.
Several stories mentioned the eyes.

That would have been easier to classify as animal reflection.
Instead, witnesses described darkness where reflected light should have appeared.

A logging crew under foreman Sullivan Paige was cutting white oak on a ridge above Draycott Hollow when the root mass of a falling tree tore open a hidden sinkhole.
The tree had grown across the depression for decades.
When it came down, soil collapsed.
A dark void appeared approximately 15 ft below.
Paige lowered a worker known in the surviving account only as Tull.
Tull expected a natural cavity.
Instead he found a passage.
The walls were smooth.

Parallel marks ran through the stone.

A fugitive can hide an entrance.
A fugitive does not need square pillars spaced evenly through a 40 ft room.
He does not need geometric channels cut into stone.

If the figures belonged to fugitives or an isolated community, their disappearance from the historical record is itself a mystery.
If the later oral descriptions grew from Harland’s account, then one must explain how a private journal unavailable until 1923 shaped stories supposedly collected from earlier witnesses.
Every explanation solved something and left something else behind.
The most extravagant version imagined generations of people adapted to underground life, pale and silent, inheritors of a civilization unknown to archaeology.
The source material leaned toward that conclusion.
The surviving story is stronger when it stops short of it.
