“Boss,” he said, pressing two fingers to an earpiece. “Desk is empty.”

A pause.

Another pause.

His face hardened.

“Understood. We’ll find her. She won’t make it back to Boston.”

My lungs stopped working.

They were here for me.

The second man swept the flashlight over the shelves. “Richard said Evelyn hid over twelve million in physical assets. Cash, bonds, gold. Somewhere in the walls.”

“Then tear the walls open.”

Twelve million dollars.

My mother had lived on diner tips while twelve million dollars slept inside this house.

The shock nearly made me stumble.

The blue house in Providence became home slowly.

Briarwood became work.
