The transcript’s most dramatic claims depend on distinguishing the supposed chambers from known Indigenous construction.
The Paiute informants, as the account presents them, did not identify the mysterious builders with the Ancestral Puebloans.

People of a different appearance and language.
People with capabilities the Paiute did not claim for themselves.
How literal any of that was remained uncertain.
Oral traditions compress time.
They combine migration, conflict, landscape, ancestors, moral memory, and cosmology into forms outsiders can easily misunderstand.
An event remembered as belonging to “people before” may refer to another Indigenous population.
A mechanism may be metaphor.
A responsive object may describe ritual architecture, echoes, moving shadows, doors, traps, or natural phenomena filtered through translation.
Powell knew translation could distort.
So did Hamblin.
A single English word could carry assumptions absent from the original.
Machine was an especially dangerous word.
