Lara Higgins arrived in Deadwood believing Elias Montgomery had requested her as a mail-order bride.

Alone in the cabin, Lara found little more than salted beef, withered potatoes, and hard flour.

She created a cheaper supply route and saved the ranch money.

Then Caleb arrived with armed men and mocked Lara.

Elias stepped into the snow.

“That woman has more intelligence, grace, and worth than your whole family.”

He called her his wife and ordered Caleb off the property.

Inside, Lara cried.
