In August of 1886, deep in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Andre Mazer began building a house that made his neighbors stop and stare.
He was not laying long logs the usual way. He was cutting cedar into short sixteen-inch pieces and setting them into mortar with the round ends facing out.
The wall looked like a stack of firewood frozen in place.

Andre set another cedar round into the pale mortar.
“A wall,” he said.

One afternoon, Harland Pike rode past on logging business. The cold was so sharp it hurt his face. As he neared Andre’s clearing, he noticed the chimney smoke.
It was not the thick desperate smoke of a house fighting to stay warm.
It was a thin, lazy ribbon.

The fuel savings were undeniable.
The new bunkhouse used less than a third of the firewood of the old ones and stayed warmer through the night.
By spring, settlers came to Andre not to laugh, but to learn.
Soon, cordwood walls began appearing across the county, their round cedar faces shining like proof.
Andre had not invented warmth.
